RESEARCHES DONE HAS SHOWN STARTLING STATISTICS THAT REPRESENT THE NUMBER OF DUGONGS LEFT TODAY . SO , LETS MAKE AN EFFORT TO SAVE THESE SEA MAMMALS ...

Dugong or also known as sea cow,are near to extinction due to several factors such as :
a)Strong tidal current and being hunted by large predators.(Killer Whales and sharks)
b)From a research obtained, dugong are also extinct due to repeated U.S- Iraq conflicts that causes large oil spills into the gulf.
c)Dugongs have a very slow population growth.Only a single calf is produced after 13 months of mating.The estimated growth of Dugong is only 5% a year.
d)They are also threatened by diseases.
e)With its long lifespan and slow rate of reproduction, the dugong is especially vulnerable to these types of exploitation.In addition, dugongs are threatened by storms and parasites
f)Since they are known as gentle mammals,they are too weak to protect themselves against predators.Dugongs are traditionally hunted by Aborigines.
g)Dugongs also live where seagrass grows but were destroyed by dredging and farm soil that are sipping into sea. Therefore, their habitat is being destroyed.
h)They are victims to large fishing net and this will eventually reduce the population of Dugongs
